Our History
A beautiful arrangement of sparkling blue water, trees of greens, yellows, orange and red, and ancient grey rocks is located about 30 kilometres north-east of Peterborough, Ont. Game fish patrol the weed beds and deeper colder depths, while birds of all sizes flit from branch to branch or like the hawk and osprey, soar overhead on the thermals. If you are quiet, you become aware of the wild animals. Squirrels, striped chipmunks, sleek mink and occasionally a deer or even a bear may be seen.
After being a fishing and hunting area for the native people and then the early settlers, it became a place to escape to, from the summer’s heat of the cities beginning in the 1880s. My great great grandfather Collins purchased one of the larger islands and erected a cottage that was used by his family during the summers. They travelled to the island from Lakefield by steam boat. In the years since then the island has been subdivided and now has nine cottages, all held by his descendants. They too use it to escape hot cities and to savour the laid-back, peaceful existence there. “My Heaven On Earth” is how one person described it.
The colours presented in my yarns represent the multiple shades to be experienced there. Family members have commented that they evoke strong memories of times at “The Lake”.
